History of 1st Pulborough and Bury Scout Group

Bury Cubs and Bury Scouts

Bury Cub Scouts were formed as a small group with one section in their own right. Bury is a small download village of 600 or so people at the foot of the South Downs. It’s numbers have always been restricted, but it’s ability to punch above it’s weight is renowned. It was one of the packs chosen to visit Buckingham Palace for the Scouts 100 celebration for example.

In 2017 though it became clear that it needed to meet the increasing demands of governance and insurance, so it became part of the 1st Pulborough and West Chilltington Scout Group as a satellite pack. This action actually enabled the numbers to swell further (at one point supporting a record twenty cubs) because of the synergy with it’s new sister sections.

In 2023 the Group’s name was changed to 1st Pulborough and Bury Scout Group in recognition of Bury Cub Pack’s role and to move on from the sadly now defunct West Chiltington section.

In 2024, the Scout Group was ready to expand a second section in Bury – a Scout Troop. Sure enough, the Bury Scout Group started in Autumn 2024, meeting in Sandham Hall, Coldwaltham because of space availability in Bury.

Similarly, after moving around to different locations around Bury as a base, including Dorset House School and Bury C of E Primary School, the Cub Pack also moved to Sandham Hall, Coldwaltham in January 2025.
